Below are a selection of dive sites accessible from Cocoa Island.

WAAGIRI: INNER REEF

Current: Small

A sheltered reef, home to many interesting small marine creatures and soft coral including nudibranch, shrimp, scorpion fish, and Fire and Arrow goby. A large frogfish sometimes resides here. There is a every opportunity of seeing the Longnosed Hawkfish which inhabits the small black coral trees at around 20 to 25m; here you can also see hundreds of very long garden eels feeding in the gentle current.

KUDAGIRI: INNER REEF WRECK DIVE

A steel coastal trader  located in 20 to 35m of water is home to many small fish. A large school of batfish can be seen on or near the wreck making for excellent photos. At certain times of year the wreck’s bridge is filled with Yellow sweeper, with Blue fin Trevally circling nearby, waiting for an easy meal. After viewing the wreck, take a leisurely swim around the reef observing Clark and Maldivian anemone fish and Fairy basslets.  The numerous caves and overhangs are filled with Soldier fish and occasionally large grouper.

GURAIDHOO: OUTER REEF AND CHANNEL

Current: Small to very strong
Camera: Wide angle (not recommended when strong currents)

Starting the dive along the outer reef provides a spectacle of  fusiliers and dog-toothed tuna. As you drift towards the corner a large school of Schooling Banner fish feed in the current. You will stop on or near the corner holding
onto the bottom to watch the action of frequently seen White Tip sharks, Grey sharks, Spotted Eagle rays, Giant Trevally and large Napoleon cruising in the  current. From May to November and with the right conditions, Hammerhead sharks  can be seen, making for a memorable dive.

COCOA THILA: THILA DIVE

Current: Medium
Camera: Wide angle (not recommended due to nature of drift dive)

Located in the middle of Kandooma channel, we enter and descend down into the  blue letting the current drift us on to the reef, where huge schools of Fusiliers, Red Snapper and Big Eye Trevally congregate on the thila corner. Large Tuna and Giant Trevally ride the currents with frequent sightings of up to 10 to 20 Spotted Eagle rays. On top of the reef, see beautiful table corals,  reef fish, and big green turtles. Drifting towards the end of the thila, find Grey sharks and White Tip sharks - common sightings, although very shy.

COCOA CORNER: OUTER REEF AND CHANNEL

Drifting along the outer reef you can see many Fusiliers and Turtles with sometimes White Tip sharks and Spotted Eagle rays near the corner of the channel. As you come into the channel small overhangs with beautiful soft
and hard coral, sea fans and sponges adorn the reef wall providing a kaleidoscope of colours . Many Groupers, Sweetlips and Soldier Fish can be seen inhabiting the caves, including occasional Honeycombed Moray along the reef.

BODUHORA: INNER REEF

Current: Small to medium

Bodu means big and Hora means sand bank in dhivehi ; in other words, a big sand bank with many patch reefs makes for a variety of  marine life, especially juveniles. You can see large schools of Blue Striped Snapper, Turtles, Blue Surgeon fish, Damselfish, Flatfish, Nudibranch, Shrimp, Lionfish, Black Spotted Pufferfish, Garden Eels and some big Morays. Lots to  see, and a relaxing dive.

BACK KANDOOMA: ALONG THE OUTER REEF

This leisurely dive incorporates numerous schools of fish located on the edge  of the drop off. You can see Blue Striped Snapper, Two Spot Snapper, and Fairy Basslets, with Black Pyramid Butterflyfish and numerous turtles, which can be approached closely. Often Skipjack Tuna, Trevally and Napoleon can be seen along the drop off. A relaxing dive for all levels of divers.

BUSHI OUT: OUTER REEF

Current: Small to strong

A variety of fish and small marine creatures inhabit the coral outcrops, including three or four species of Fusiliers, the Yellow Backed, Blue Striped, Two Spot and Midnight Snapper, Napoleon, Convict Surgeon Fish, Turtles, Morays and  sometimes Lobster. As you near the channel, encounter Trevally , Skipjack Tuna and White Tip sharks. A good dive for the fish follower, or just relax and enjoy the scenery.

1. Lankan Manta Point
Location : Outside of Lankan Finolhu (Paradise Island Resort)
Distance from Vabbinfaru/Ihuru : One hour
Best time to dive : South West Monsoon (April – December)
Average visibility : 10 - 25 meters, but visibility may reach up to 40 meters
Depth of reef : Average 8 - 20 meters. Maximum: 30 meters
Features : Manta rays, turtles, schooling fishes, giant trevallys.

“Lankan Manta Point’ is located on the outside reef of Paradise Island Resort (Lankan Finolhu). Between 8 - 22 meters of water on the south east corner of Lankanfinolhu reef are several large rocks which mark the point where the Manta Rays converge during the south west monsoon. These rocks are one big cleaning station for the Manta Rays. The reef top starts from 8 meters forming a gradual slope down to 30 meters. During the South West Monsoon when the plankton blooms Manta Rays gather at various cleaning stations where the cleaner wrasses are waiting to remove the old skin and the parasites and when finished they swim gracefully up and down the reef feeding on zooplankton in shallow water. The ‘Manta Rays’ can grow up to 4 meters in width and can remain at the cleaning station circling around the divers throughout the dive until we are bored!. A unique and exciting dive for all level of divers, even without the mantas.

“Kuda Haa” is a protected marine sanctuary shaped like a two-humped camel’s back. Rising from 35 meters below the sea to six, this beautiful reef is covered in sponges and corals. The abundance of fish living here simply takes your breath away. Large schools of blue-striped snapper roam the deep; clouds of basslets, fusiliers and butterfly fish swim all over, while sharks hover in the shallow areas. You might also come across moray eels, cleaner shrimp and the rare scorpion and leaf fish. This is truly a dive you shouldn’t miss when visiting the Maldives.

3. Dhon Bibi Haa
Location : South west North Male Atoll

“Dhon Bibi Haa’ is a small circular reef located in the inner atoll about 30 minutes from the resort. The top reef extends to about 60 – 70 meters in diameter with the top starting from 3-4 meters. The reef walls sheer to the sandy bottom to a depth of 25 – 30 meters. Various colorful coral blocks are located between 17-24 meters. The most interesting part of the reef is the top and the coral blocks where we have the possibility to see a good variety such as frog fish , stonefish’s, lion fish and if you are lucky you can encounter the ribbon eels.
Due to the location the reef is very much protected from strong current making it a dive site for all level of divers.

4. Hulhangu Kandu
Location : North West Male Atoll
Distance from Vabbinfaru/Ihuru : 45 minutes
Best time to dive : All year round
Average visibility : 20 - 40 meters
Depth of reef : 10 - 40meters
Features : Pelagics , reef fish , eagle rays

“Hulhangu Kandu” is situated on the corner of an outer reef next to a channel where the reef is formed with a few ‘humps” (part of the reef coming out of the reef into blue water formed as humps). As the reef is not in one line the current keeps changing due to the protection of the reef. The top reef slopes down from 7-10 meters to over 50 meters. When commencing your dive you will jump into the edge of the reef into the deep blue of the ocean with nothing much around you until the current takes you to the front point of the reef, where you might observe a large school of gray reef, silver tip and white tip sharks circling the deeper waters. Looking up at the surface you will discover eagle rays dancing in the current accompanied by tunas and barracudas. After some time of underwater dreaming, you can let the current carry you along the reef and enjoy the other treasures it has to offer.

5. Nassimo Thila (Paradise Rock)

“Nassimo Thila” is regarded as one of the best sites for soft corals & marine life in North Male’ atoll. It’s an oval shape reef with the top from 10 – 15 meters with several large pinnacles of soft corals scattered at various depth from 18 – 25 meters These rocks are exposed to full force of the current and a spectacular display of soft corals can be observed on the rock faces and overhangs. On the North side of the main reef between 15-22 meters there are beautiful overhangs full of yellow & blue soft corals. On the southern end, the overhangs are full of sea fans in various sizes and soft corals. On several occasions we have encountered napoleons, large tunas, sharks, big-eye trevallys, black snappers and nurse sharks. Due to the location strong current can be encountered making it a bit of a challenge. Need to be an advance diver to make most of it.

6. Okobe Thila
Location : Inner South East North Male Atoll

The “Okobe” marine reserve is one of the most awe-inspiring dive sites in the Maldives, a small thila consisting of three large rock formations starting from 10 – 28 meters. A descent line is used due to the size of the reef to avoid being drifted off the reef. All three rocks are pitted with nooks and crannies, steep ledges, overhangs and caves providing a variety of marine life for the divers. The top reef is also famous for anemone fish in large numbers. If you believe you are in an aquarium, you will be forgiven. The reef is not large but requires more than one dive if you want to take in all the beautiful corals and fish. A “must see” dive in the North Male Atoll.

7. Rasfari ( protected marine area)
Location : Outside Rasfari

Features : Sharks, pelagics, eagle rays , trevallys

“Rasfari” is a spectacular outer reef of Rasfari Island There is plenty of variation on topography with sandy inlets and ridges cutting across a wide outside reef.. Its large sloping wall falls from 10 meters to a depth of 28 meters. On the sandy bottom at a depth of 28 meters on top a thila (circular reef) can be spotted where it drops down over 30 meters from outside. The top of the thila is a perfect location to observe the pelagics, grey reef sharks , schooling big-eye trevallys , great barracuda’s and schooling eagle rays. Oceanic reef sharks have been spotted a few times. Due to the depth to do the proper dive need to be an advance diver with a bit of experience. Strong current can be encountered and can be done as a drift dive.

8. Bodu Hithi Thila
Location : Thila inside Hithi Kandu
Distance from Vabbinfaru/ Ihuru : One hour
Best time to dive : All year around
Average visibility : 8 - 25 meters
Depth of reef : 5 - 30 meters
Features : Mantas, reef fishes, nurse sharks, reef sharks, lobsters

“Bodu Hithi Thila” is a formation a huge thila (circular reefs) located in the middle of the inner atoll just 55 minutes from the resort. The reef top is 8-10 meters and there are three bays in the reef with sandy bottom between 15-25 meters. These sandy bays on the top reef are sometimes known as ‘Manta Road’, as this is where mostly they gather for cleaning. This is a long reef with the best diving in the southern end. On one point there is a huge cave at 17 meters where divers can look into. On many occasions nurse sharks have bee spotted in this cave and on the top reef underneath the blocks. Hard coral cover is not the best but there are plenty of healthy light blue soft corals. Manta rays are seen over here between December and April. During your dive you can kneel on the sandy road whilst watching these majestic mantas circling above you waiting for their turn to be cleaned. As it is not uncommon to see ten or more manta rays at a time, this dive has become a big attraction for both beginners and experienced divers.

“Banana Reef” is a very well known dive site in the Maldives - one of the first, one of the best and one of the more treacherous due to strong currents. On the eastern side of the banana-shaped reef, some rocks have broken away and created a perfect habitat for a surprising variety of schooling reef fish and large pelagic. Amongst the large overhangs resides an enormous school of blue-striped snapper. As you carry on along this banana-shaped dive, you will discover a pristine reef wall bursting with life, from different species of moray eels to fascinating corals and fish. Suitable for all level of divers depending on the current.

‘Maagiri’ is a huge ‘thila’ located in the inner channel of Kanduoggiri & Lankan Finolhu surrounded by a number of small thilas. North side of Maagiri is known as Maagiri caves which consist of small overhangs between the depths of 5 -30 meters, with a big rock at 20 meters appear to have broken away from the reef creating a canyon. On the Eastern side of Maagiri there are series of rock formations around 20 meters that is mainly protected from strong currents making it an ideal site for beginners and experience divers and photographers who prefers to do slow dives.

Kandooma Thila Thila shaped like a teardrop between 16 and 30m deep. About 250m long - one of the most spectacular dives of this atoll, for scenery as well as prolific fish life. West and north coast are covered with soft corals and schools of red bass or even big-eye trevallies. Top reef is about 20m. There are some outcrops and overhangs where the soft coral outgrowth is very good, but the nicest feature there is the nearly sure meeting with grey sharks, white tip sharks and eagle rays that should be found on the north east of the reef, along with tuna and barracuda. To finish in style on the top reef where the hard coral is still intact, green turtles and maybe a school of batfish might accompany. 5 minutes

Kandooma Caves These huge caverns are among the largest and the nicest of all the Maldives’ tourists’ atolls. Two big caves close to one another are just 50m from the corner, one at 20m, the other one at 16m, and the latest one is 70m long and has a curly overhang. Inside the pass, there is a cave at about 10m with a hole going all the way to the top reef at 5m. Inside the caves, we will see yellow sponges, seafans, blue soft coral, small tube corals and often giant morays, as well as squirrelfish, and many groupers. Along the reef we should see clown triggerfish, napoleon, sweetlips, and angelfish, and this is a great site to spot many turtles, especially green turtles. 5 minutes

Cocoa Corner Reef located on the north side of the Kandooma channel. The wall of the channel is steep and we can find many caves and overhangs, whereas the outside reef slopes more gently. Inside the channel 200m from the corner, is a large outcrop of reef 20m long at the depth of 30m. The outside corner offers a great diversity of fish life. School of sweetlips, snappers, fusiliers, many groupers are very often seen. We can even spot on the corner at 30m some white tips reef sharks, eagle rays, grey reef sharks. There is also a great quantity of colourful soft coral after the corner in-between 10 and 20m. Some beautiful caves and overhangs at the end of the dive with an in-going current or at the start with an out-going. 10 minutes

Guraidhoo (Protected Marine Area) South side of the channel of Guraidhoo (Local Island). The reef slopes from 6 to 30m on the outside and from the surface to 30m on the inside. It has a very abundant fish life, as well as overhangs and caves. Can be dive with an in going or out going current. The site offers schools of bannerfish, fusiliers, tuna, rainbow runner and more. Under the caves and overhangs we find beautiful seafans, sponges, as well as a lot of groupers. Deeper we should come across grey sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays, sting rays. A big napoleon seems to have taken place there and often comes to see the divers. If there is small current we could enjoy looking for the small, such as nudibranchs, shrimps, moray eel getting cleaned, turtles are often found on the top reef. You can also meet dolphins in the blue during winter time. 15 minutes

Losfushi Canyon Little channel on the North side of Guraidhoo channel. This channel has a very shallow, narrow sandy canyon, separating the inside from the outside. The channel deepens inside to a sandy bottom at 30m, and the reef slopes from 6m to 30m on the outside. There is plenty of fish life inside the channel and especially inside the canyon. School of sweetlips, snapper, fusiliers, butterflies are very common. At the entrance of the canyon, with an in going current, white tips reef sharks are very often spotted as well as napoleon. The canyon is the high light due to the quantity and diversity of fish and also to the reflection of the light on the sandy bottom. 15 minutes

Vaagali Thila A very nice thila starting at 5m depth with a sandy terrace at 30m depth. With in-going current, easy to see grey reef sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays, stingrays, schools of barracuda and napoleon wrasse. Plenty of overhangs with many life inside, such as lobsters and honeycomb moray. The rare red anemone can also be easily seen here. West side of the atoll. 40 minutes

Ranikan The reef is on the west side of Rihiveli. The top reef is between 5 and 10 m, and is dropping slowly to a sand patch at around 30 m. Overhangs can be found in at all depths, but some lovely caves around 12m offer a great variety of coral, white tip shark, turtles, lobster. Whether at 12m, 20m or 30m, Ranikan has abundance and a great diversity of marine life. All kind of tropical fish are there, butterfly, sweetlips, angel or trigger, but we can also see the white tip sharks either in the caves around 12m, or down on the sand at 25m, lobsters and big groupers are hiding in those caves, as well as turtles. Great site to spot torpedo ray or stingrays, leaf fish are not rare there if we look well enough, lionfish are very numerous, and the coral on the overhangs are very delicate. Big Napoleon as well as mantis shrimp or ribbon eels can also be seen. In wintertime, the visibility is great, at least 30m, which makes the relief of this spot and its life unforgettable. In summer, the visibility is affected by plankton, bringing it down to a mere 10m, but it is during this season that we might spot manta rays, or even a whale shark. 50 minutes
